By the next morning it was estimated to be around 20% under control, this means while they poured and dropped unknown Litres of water on it during Sunday and through the night they couldn’t make a massive difference, the fire kept chewing up the ‘native’ grasses trees and whatever else it came upon.

Onto the current day – the official FENZ update #13 shows that there may still be a ways to go.

“The weather is perfect for fire suppression, no good for getting an aerial view of the ground,” Nigel Dravitzki says. “Once we are able to get airborne, we will fly around the full perimeter and get an accurate measure of the area. Indications are that the size has not increased since Sunday night but I won’t be confident about that until we have seen it.” The last estimate was 2800 hectares.

– F.E.N.Z New Hub (Tongariro National Park Fire Update #13
https://www.fireandemergency.nz/incidents-and-news/news-and-media/tongariro-national-park-fire-update-13/

Now to the real “issue” – and it’s not the cause of the fire.

The Rahui issued by the local Iwi (Ngati Hikairo ki Tongariro)

Firstly though what is a Rahui?
A Rahui (in my experience) is an “Un-enforceable block on visitors to an area or a block on gathering something like sea food form a beach” (Spoiler this has not worked for beaches or estuaries at all in the past)

Here are the details of the two Rahui curtesy of TVNZ One News
(yes I Know, quoting MSM is not my gig but since I am not there to ask questions directly I have to deal with the second best, which is to trust that the MSM have got it right this time.
